Is there a way to make my timeline a bit more distinctive by changing things like the border color of an entry, or the background color, or increasing the font size of some events?

Unfortunately no, this kind of thing isn’t available.
You are able to increase the font size of all events at once by changing the Workview zoom level in the bottom right of the view, but I assume this isn’t what you are after, if you are wanting it different for individual events.
