Can't unlink a linked Scrivener text file

Aeon Timeline
Version: 3.4.23
Shell Version: 3.4.23
Opening mode: about.editor
Operating System: Mac OS X 15.6.0
Device Model: Mac14,2

I keep “outline” and other text documents in my Scrivener chapter folders. When I synced in V2 Timeline I could ‘ignore’ them for the sync. It appears that feature is no longer in V3.

Steps to reproduce

Installe V3 Timeline. Opened V2 Timeline project. Began re-arranging scenes and chapters then noticed that my metadata files had been synced. Tried in vain to find the ‘ignore’ button. Nothing in the doc which seems to be mainly V2. The forum also seems to be primarily for V2.

Answer the following questions, if possible:

  • Are you able to reproduce this bug reliably?
    Yes

  • Can you make this bug happen with a clean timeline file?
I’ve invested far too much into this timeline to start from scratch

  • Does it only happen with a specific timeline file?
Don’t know. I’m unwilling to break any of my other V2 files as I might have to revert back to V2 Timeline if this can’t be fixed.

Any relevant files?

If there is a file that is particularly relevant to your bug, it is usually much faster for us to diagnose and fix bugs (and potentially repair files) if you can send them to us.

Please follow these steps:

  1. Finish posting this bug report to the forum
  2. Send an email to support@timeline.app, including:
    • A one-line summary of the issue
    • The URL of your post
    • Your timeline file, as an attachment

Hi
This is not the manual, sort of, but hopefully you will be inspired

What I have experienced was that when I first set up Sync, I could (prior to do the sync) select which items in the timeline I would ignore. These gets a ghostlike avatar.

I you want to go the otherway, it seems not possible per see, but I have used this workaround for items I dont want to syncronise.
I Aeon you select “the textfile” so it shows in sidebare.
At the bottom of this you have the option “Delete” (red text)
once you do this it will disappear in Aeon… AND
In Scrivener it wil land in the “trash”

Then you move the file from Trash back into your project.

the next time you open the sync dialog you can locate the name of the textfile and it will show a smal avatar a plus with a circle around it.
click on this and you will see (to the right) The name of the textfile in Scrivener and just below “Create new”… click the Change button and select “Ignore”

Hope you can find inspiration in this Tale

Hello GreyT,

Thank you for the quick response. I tried your method but had to modify it

  • In Scrivener move the file to the trash
  • Sync in Timeline
  • you must now delete the file from the spreadsheet or narrative or relationship tabs too
  • Scrivener - restore file from trash
  • Timeline now shows the CHANGE button to select IGNORE (just like V2). So select ignore.
  • Sadly Timeline seems to ignore the Ignore button if you don’t delete the file from the other tabs. That is, even though it has a ghost icon the file still appears in the spreadsheet, narrative, and relationship tabs unless you delete it from there.

I consider this to be a bug of not giving us the CHANGE button all the time. I also consider it a bug to not ignore something marked as IGNORE. Shall I report it as a bug or can you do that for me (if you consider it to be a bug).

I have about 25 files I now must do this for.

Thank you very much for your help on this.

Hi Howard,

Just to confirm, are you wanting the document to exist in Scrivener, but not in Aeon Timeline?

In that case you do need to either delete or remove the event from the narrative in Aeon Timeline, but you can set it to be ignored before you sync so that you don’t have to deal with recovering it from Scrivener’s trash.

  1. Select the event in the Narrative in Aeon Timeline

  2. Delete or remove it from the narrative in the inspector

    • Select “Remove from narrative” if you want it to still exist in the Timeline and other views
    • Select “Delete” if you want it gone from Aeon Timeline altogether
  3. Open the sync panel on the left, and select the removed event

  4. In the sync inspector on the right, it will say “Timeline: Delete (Change)”. Click Change and select “Ignore”.

  5. The event will change to a ghost icon in the sync binder. It will continue to exist as a document in Scrivener, but won’t be in your Aeon Timeline narrative.

Great explanation (look like using snag it which I love)

Hello Rebecca,

All very nice if you are making a new project. But if you are opening a V2 project with V3 then you may have a lot of work to do. I see you have neglected to mention that you must also delete the event from the spreadsheet, relationship and narrative because Timeline doesn’t respect the ‘ignore’ in those views.

PLUS

If at any time in the life of the V3 project you want to delete a file from V3 but not Scrivener (like you move a chapter to your ‘killed darlings’ folder), you must do this all over again.

The simple solution is for the programmers at Aeon to put the “change” link back on EVERY event regardless of its status instead of purposefully hiding it.

IMO this is still a bug.

I thank you very much for taking the time to reply.

Actually I use screeenshot.
