I created a timeline. It does not have any option to add character groups, which wasn’t a problem at first, but now I realise I need to organise the characters into Groups.
Is it possible to retrospectively add grouping as an option to my timeline?
I am a bit unsure what you mean with a character group, do you mean that you can combine the characters into groups that can be connected to an event or do you mean to group them in the timeline in a specific way?
I am far from an expert, but I think you need to add a new data type named Character Group (or whatever else you want to, the name is not important to Aeon):
- Go to Timeline setting (how depends on your operating system, on mac it is ⌘-,).
- Select Data Types and then Edit in the top right corner.
- Add a new item type and fill in al the fields according to what you think is reasonable.
- Check “Enabled”
- Go to Relationships tab and select you new item type.
- At the bottom, select which items types (probably Person) should have field for this item type and allowed item types for this relationship.
I think that it is. It can help to create a completely new timeline and select on of the templates and dig around to see how they did it and copy that. It is not difficult but you probably have to experiment a bit before you get it right. Can also help to do the experimentation in a separate timeline in case you screw up.
Thanks for that. I’ll give it a try. I normally use the novel template that already has the character group available.
Just seemed weird when it wasn’t there on this occasion.

Are you sure you based the new timeline on this template? Had Character Groups been available before in this timeline? It might be so you accidentally selected another template for this timeline. Otherwise I find it strange that the Character Group vanishes. Have you been editing the data types and might have deleted it by accident?
I’m pretty sure I based this on a different template. I guess I’d assumed that character groups were automatically available in all templates as they’re such a useful concept.
