Duplicating a Timeline (or other work around)

I’ve been using Aeon as my bible for my various series. It keeps all my characters together, plus since my stories often happen in real time, it’s easy for me to see when certain books take place. However, I’m morphing one 15-book series into a second series with the same characters and relationships.

I’ve tried to figure out how to copy and paste a bunch of data from one project to another, but can’t find any recommendations that don’t look insanely complicated, resulting in a massive mess. In particular, it doesn’t look like the export/import option is all that effective, or even possible in Aeon 3. I could be wrong.

It seems like the easiest thing would be to duplicate the one project, rename it to the new series, then delete a lot of the individual events for the earlier books. But there doesn’t seem to be a way to do that, either.

I don’t mind keeping the two series together, but is there a limit on how large a project can be?

Thanks for any thoughts, including some ideas I may have missed.

Hi @RobinG there are no limits on how large a project can be, so you could have all the data from all your books in the one timeline if you wanted to.

It’s possible to copy/paste data between files, or import/export data via CSV. However, we’d recommend that your target file includes all the relationship and item types found in your source file. Otherwise, you may need to reconfigure this info manually.

One way to easily do this is to save your existing timeline as a template: File > Save as template. You’ll then have the option to use the template when starting a new file (normally found under the custom tab).

You could also use one of the other options under the File menu (Duplicate, or Save As) to create a carbon copy of your timeline, then delete any info you don’t need.

  • Hold the Opt key to see the Save As option if you’re on a Mac.

CSV Export/Import:

  • Go to File > Export > Export as CSV/TSV
  • In the new file, go to File > Import CSV or TSV
  • Match up your data in the import settings.

See here for more info: Importing text (e.g. CSV) files

Copying and Pasting Data Between Files:

  • This is easiest to do in the spreadsheet view.
  • Highlight the rows you need to copy, then simply paste them into the spreadsheet in your new file.

Very clear discussion, thank you. In windows only have option to Save As (no duplicate option as in the Mac)
