File/Save As and not just File/Save and File/Duplicate

The only other app on OS-X I know that does not have a File/Save As, is Apple’s Preview. The combination of File/Duplicate + File/Save as a substitute for Save As, sucks. It’s hard to use compared to Save As, and it can lead to errors.

Duplicate + Save sucks even harder in Aeon Timeline. Especially since Duplicate won’t let me put the new file in a different place. It promises to do so, but that option is greyed out. I can’t even copy the path to a file using Aeon.

This matters because I’m keeping my Aeon file in Scrivener’s Binder. Scrivener does a great job of keeping files, even managing revisions (for Aeon files, by letting me duplicate the file in Scrivener, then rename the original to a new rev number, and finally squirrel away the duplicate somewhere safe (within Binder). Here’s my example: AeonTimeline in Scrivener

As you well know, discovering where Scrivener keeps this file is a nightmare. All files are named “content” (with the appropriate extension) and hidden inside a folder with a GUID for a name. Here’s my Recent Files menu, the ugly is obvious:

Now I’ve got to dive into the .scriv package, look for “New File”, and delete it.

Anyway, don’t fix File/Duplicate. Rather delete it and give us a real, working File/Save As with a working rename facility. View any Mac app for ideas.

Thanks a million.

As an aside, the Windows version has “Save As.”

Hold down the option key when you have the File menu open; that should reveal “save as”

Most macOS apps work this way.

Edited to add:

shortcut is shift+option+command+S

That does work, and it allows me to change the target folder. However most Mac apps don’t need the Option key trick because the vast majority of apps I checked have a Save As and not a Duplicate. Scapple is an exception (but Scrivener has Save As), XCode has Duplicate, and I already mentioned Apple’s Preview. All three respond to the Option trick. Good to know.

But can we make Aeon Timeline for Mac work like the vast majority of Mac Apps (and Windows apps). Thanks.

Being Apple, they have a certain standard that ALL apps are supposed to follow; and ALL Apple apps follow it to a Tee.

Except when they don’t! (as you documented).

Take care.
