How I use Aeon Timeline for novel writing

I created this video to show my fellow writers in an online community of novelists how I use Aeon Timeline for my novel. I didn’t rehearse it so it’s not particularly polished, but still, it might be helpful for others here who are thinking about using it for their novel project: How I use Aeon Timeline and Scrivener together

Thank you for the insights into your work. It really makes me want to give up procrastinating and rework the plot of my current novel project. :upside_down_face:

I find the synchronization between AT and Scrivener with running programs impressive (I understood correctly, didn’t I?). If it works smoothly, it’s definitely far better than anything one can build oneself as file-based synchronization with 3rd-party software. So forget open source software and go mainstream!

But because I’m a tinkerer, I’ll stick with my homemade novel organizer, OpenOffice, and AT2 for now. I just need to be able to stop coding at some point.

Yes, syncing optionally works with both AT3 and Scrivener running. In that case, AT3 will close and reopen Scrivener so that it updates. It’s really very cool how it works.

I admire your coding ability, but I think I’d also be a tinkerer if I had it. :grimacing:

Nice rundown of your workflow and your musical inventiveness is impressive. The light but fatalistic opening phrases gaining ever heavier foundation - very expressive. I liked the tension of leading tones and dissonance, adding a quirky sense of foreboding.

What instruments did you use to record that?

It’s nice to have your feedback on the theme sketch. Thank you.

For this concept sketch, I used a harp, celeste, solo oboe, solo violin, violin sections I and II, viola section, cello section, and contrabass section.

I wrote via notation using Dorico. I used the BBC Symphony Orchestra Pro sample library for the recording, which was routed through Dorico with NotePerformer Playback Engines.

Once my novels are completed and I have composed the full score and related pieces of music, I am considering having it recorded by a scoring orchestra.

Thank you for sharing this video. I found it very interesting.

You have many novels, including the current one and some planned ones, in the same Aeon project (3:00). Do you expect to have only one Scrivener project for all novels, or maybe to have one Scrivener project for each novel and then let Aeon’s single project sync all the scenes in those, nevertheless?

Great question. I have all the novels on one AT project, which I sync with one Scrivener project that also contains all the novels of the series. That way, I can plan and track within and across the novels, sharing the world, characters, objects, magic system, etc. Plus, I can track not just the story beats within each novel but my series-wide story beats.
