How many item types is too many?

Hello All,

New user here - I’m creating a timeline to show the lives and events of American artists from the 19th and early 20th centuries. My question is: how do you know when something should be it’s own item type vs just another general Event? For example, I have item types for the following:

  • Artist
  • Event
  • Location
  • Work of art
  • Education
  • Teacher
  • Student
  • Travel
  • Exhibition

But I could continue this list and make item types for things like personal events (death of a loved one), awards, and patrons as well. I will likely find others that feel like their own thing as I continue working. How do you know when to keep expanding item types or just group things as “Events”?

Thanks for any advice!

Interesting question, Zack. So long as an item type relates to something interesting to track, I can think of little downside to creating it.

In my case, I’m writing a novel series, yet I use relatively few item types compared to the rich complexity of a fantasy story:

Thank you, Steve! I’ll keep going ahead with it then. Appreciate you taking the time to respond and provide screenshots!
