In TL2, you can collapse lanes individually when using Grouped By. See attached.
The only way I can see to do something similar in TL3 is to open the Stacked Groups options, click through the selection, and deselect the item. This is clearly not the same behaviour, very clicky-clicky, and gets old very quickly.

No, this is not included in version 3. I wouldn’t rule it out if we get a lot of feedback about it, but it is unlikely we will reintroduce it.
With the stacked groups now sitting within a split view that can itself be collapsed, we felt having those mechanisms nested within each other would not be a good design choice.
As you say, the footer button to turn groups on or off altogether, including the ability to mix different types of groups, is the replacement for this.
You can also use the the filter icons in the entity panels in combination with split views as a different way to achieve similar workflows, which we talk about here:
