How to set up timeline w/multiple addresses & people?

Good Day, I’m new to AEON TL and hoping I can get some guidance on best way to set up a timeline for a genealogy project. The data spans 19th and 20th century, entering who lived at what address in Balto City by year. I have about 50 addresses and about 30 names.

I’d like to include different years someone lived at address, not always consecutively, occupation, if own property, biz in area if possible.

Then to see correlations between occupation, address, and when who lived where.

I hope this is making sense. Been pouring through the tutorials and YouTube videos and have learned a lot. Seems easier at this point to ask about my specific project given the experience of people here.

A specific question I have…at first I entered addresses as Events. I entered one street name as an event then entered all the Item - People - under that address for a specific year. Do you think it makes sense to do it that way? My goal is to see as much at once, as possible, on the timeline about who lived at what address and when, their occupation, if owned property.

Does it make sense to enter People like do Events separately on the timeline? When I use the Inspector to make a relationship of a person with an address, I can only see their initials. I need to see their whole name.

Last year we had a question here that was aimed in a similar direction.

I suggested combining individuals/families and places of residence in events. These events can then also be related to the individuals and addresses (which are also created as item types).

For example, we have the Smallways family as an item. Then we have Bun Hill and Little Bazeley addresses as items. The time span where the Smallways live in Bun Hill is an event. The same applies to the time span where they live in Little Bazeley.

See the screenshots in my answer in the thread mentioned above.

Does this help?

Thank you, Peter. Your reply introduces a new concept and option of combining information. I like that. I have to see how many actual families I’m looking at.

Ancestors and people they were connected to, lived at many addresses. They moved a lot and many times by themselves. But I’m sure there are some families in the data I can track with an event and timeline.

Hi Ann, you can change the way people are shown on the events in settings.

  1. Select the Item Types tab.
  2. Select Person.
  3. Choose Short label from the options under Compact Display.

In terms of your timeline set up, I’m thinking of something along the same lines as what @Peter_T has suggested, using events to show when people have been living at an address.

You could also use grouping to arrange the events onto separate rows based on their relationship with the address, or the person living there.

The image below is just a quick example to show what it might look like, and how you can use the Group menu to choose what to show.

It sounds like your main point of interest is to create a record of each address and log the details of the resident, their occupation, and the ownership status of the property during each period of residence.

Is that right? or would you prefer to see it based on the people, where they lived, and the dates for each place of employment?

You also mentioned wanting to track whether people had owned a business in the area. Were any of your 50 addresses commercial locations, or are they all residential?

Do you have any sample data you’d be willing to share? It will help us better understand what you’re working with.

If you send that through to support@aeontimeline.com we’ll have a look and see if we can create an example file to help you get started.

Thanks so much, Rob. Yes, that’s correct a record of each address, details of resident, occupation, and who owned the property.

I also tried making each address an event (as shown in your Group screenshot) and the people listed at those addresses as separate. But hadn’t tried groupings. Wasn’t sure if this line up would give me the most ‘everything all at once’ view that I’m looking for.

After all the data is entered, I’m mostly interested in how people were connected with one other. Hoping the visuals will pop with relationships once I’ve entered it all.

Regarding biz, I mainly want to add a few relevant biz that were in their neighborhood just for reference. I get this information from the 19th century Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. I have no records, so far, about ancestor ownership of any of the bars they worked, just that they were barkeepers. I’d like to provide a snapshot of their social environs.

Sample data is on it’s way!

Thanks Ann, I’ve received your email. Having a look now and will reply to you there.
