Keywords vs. Custom Meta-data

I’m tinkering with my sync setup for a Scrivener project, learning as I go. I want to be able to use Aeon’s Subway Map view, so I’ll be using the Story Arc field for each of my events. For my sync set-up, I need to choose between syncing Story Arc in Aeon to a keyword in Scrivener, or to a custom meta-data field. Can anyone clue me in on the advantages and disadvantages of each of those two approaches, please? This will also help me resolve the same sync design question for theme, character, and location. Thanks for any tips.

A few differences between the two:

  • Scrivener has additional functionality for its keywords, eg. it allows you to search for documents via keyword.

  • Scrivener only allows one set of custom metadata which is applicable for all documents. Therefore if you ware also syncing things like your character lists, then relationships that don’t apply (eg. Story Arc) will still appear in the custom metadata for your character documents (just with no information)

  • Custom metadata displays the type of relationship. So if you had multiple relationships you were syncing (eg. Participants, Witnesses, Locations, Story Arcs etc.), these would all come under their separate headings and you can see what information belongs to which category. If you use keywords, then this just gives you a list of relationships without telling you what type they are.
