Online, offline?

Hello, I’m very happy with the new version, still on “extended” trial from beta.
But, I was wondering, yesterday I tried to run on my laptop while not at home, so it was offline, and I got this :

Is internet also mandatory with the paid and registered version, or is it just with the trial mode ? It is not really bad, but still a bit annoying…

Oh, that’s bad! Really bad.

Although I haven’t done so since the full release, I sometimes take my laptop along to work where there is no internet access.

If this software is “held hostage” to having internet access for it to work, its value is much reduced as I won’t be able to rely on it working.

Please clarify, Aeon!

I turned off the Internet on my laptop and AT3 started without any problems

also disconnected from mothership on my MacBook and Aeon started up just fine with no internet connection…

Probably stating the obvious, but if your project file sits in a cloud storage you might have a problem if offline as well.

I work with Dropbox and it works offline

Well, with Windows I get the exact same error message as the op when my laptop is in flight mode.
After dismissing the message, TL is in trial mode.

So it has nothing to do with where data files are stored.

As others are stated you should be able to use Aeon Timeline offline except for the conditions stated in the algorithm, so we will look into the issues you are seeing.

An update.
This problem/bug only occurs on my laptop, not my desktop PC, although they have pretty similar configurations.

On the laptop:

  1. When TL starts without an active internet connection, e.g. if flight-mode is active, the error shown in the initial post is displayed.
  2. I then get the log-in to your account dialog.
  3. When internet is restored, I still get the log-in dialog and I have to enter my credentials to get the program working again.

I hope this provides a clue as to what’s going on.

Was this issue ever fully answered? Can I register AT3, and then use it without “logging in” every time? Is it like a registration - one time and you’re done? Or is it like online software - Log in every time you want to use it? I want software I can start and use while on an airplane without internet, as well as from my office, where I don’t want it to use the internet.

The text from the help page is ambiguous, at best: “Logging into your account to unlock editing capability
But once logged in, you will be able to continue to use the application without an internet connection.”

Once unlocked, is editing forever after available, or do I need to continually log in every time I start my computer?

No you don’t need to continually log in every time you start your computer if you wish to use Aeon Timeline offline. Once you have logged in with the internet connection, the editing is forever available unless you manually log out yourself, or uninstall the program.
