Relationship View Column Filters

Is there a way to filter the available columns like you can filter the available rows? I have a lot of characters across multiple stories, and it would be incredible if I could pick characters (or locations) by tag rather than having to go through the entire saga’s roster.

Alternatively, if there were a way to save selected columns as a preset, that would be just as useful.

There is a “Choose Columns” option in the upper left of the Relationship view.

Yep, I’ve been using that. But I was hoping there would either (a) be a way to filter mass groups of characters by tag, or (b) somehow save filter options so I could switch between them without manually selecting and deselecting all the appropriate characters.

Ah, I see what you mean there.

Hi @Recon other than what @SCN has suggested, there isn’t currently a way to filter out the visible columns in the relationship view. It would be very useful when there are a lot of columns to work with, though, so we’ll take it into account for future development.

Out of interest, you’ve mentioned using tags as a potential filter. Are there any other types of filters you find yourself wanting to use? Color, something else?

Thanks Rob,

Yes, I use tags as my primary means of filtering because any item can have multiple tags, which lets me get very specific in my filtering. Though I’m still quite new at all of this. I’ve only recently found how to add groups like filtering for specific characters, which is really amazing when I want to only focus on a handful of characters and their relevant events.

Even after believing I’ve finally figured out how it works, however, there are some inconsistencies in how the filters work. It always comes down to the behavior of multiple interacting groups. I may make some videos illustrating the behavior since it’s quite complex and difficult to articulate.

Overall, I believe I could really help identify strong areas for improving the software’s feature set, since I’m a career software developer myself, turned storyteller and world builder. Things like being able to assign different entities to subway tracks would be amazing, for example.

Anyway, I wish you all the best and eagerly await news of feature updates over the next year. Just bought the software two days ago, so now I can relax and just build with it. Took 11 days to decide that this was, in fact, the tool I needed. Maybe one day we can talk about syncing with Obsidian… One day.

In case it’s helpful feedback…

I make extensive use of item types, which it already filters columns by.

I can see how filtering columns by tags could be useful, too.

I wonder if the full filtering function could be optionally extended to filter the columns in Relationship view.

Ooh, I forgot that this was a thing. Hey can you assign subway tracks to your custom item types? That might be handy.

Can you share a few use cases for the way you implement custom item types?

Yes, you can assign Subway tracks to custom item types. In fact, that’s what makes the Subway view so powerful and essential for me as a novelist.

You asked about my use case. I’m writing a fantasy novel series. My custom item types are fairly simple:

  • Beat - Helps me track the story beat in the Save the Cat 15-beat system.

  • Location - The place the scene takes place (narrower than setting, per se).

  • Object - Things like swords.

  • Spell

  • Theme

  • Great Ruling House - I use this to track under which ruling house’s domain a scene takes place. In a future novel most of the story shifts to a different ruling house’s domain.

  • Compose - Tells me in which scenes I need to compose music (unusual for a novel, I admit, but hey, my novel has a strong musical theme).

  • Prophecy - Helps me identify those scenes where the prophecy is revealed or fulfilled.

  • Novel - Helps me identify which novel in the series the scene belongs to.

  • Goal - Helps me identify the hero’s goal in a given scene. (My story has one POV, the hero’s.)

I hope this is helpful. Great questions.

That’s good to hear! I’ve been wondering how to select “tracks” to add to the subway view. I haven’t really gotten into subway yet, as I mainly use the Timeline view. But once I start getting relationships between various entities built, I can imagine subway being super handy.

Problem is, when I go to subway view, I only see three choices for “Tracks”.
From what you describe, it sounds like there should be more options here.

Tracks

Try adding a new item type (using the settings cog in the upper right of AT). See if it now shows up in Subway view.
