Search Replace Not Working

I have a number of vertical bar characters “|” in my timeline. I’m trying to search and replace with a horizontal line “-” but it’s doing some strange.

THIS:
Apple | Sauce

TURNS INTO:
-A-p-p-l-e-|-S-a-u-c-e-
