Show changed events when dates are changed

I might have already said this before, but I’d like to ask for it if I haven’t and just have a foggy brain over time.

When I change an event’s date and then select to have the current or other event updated, I often get the “# events changed” notification bar in the lower right corner. While I suppose it’s good to know a number, what I really need to know is which ones they were.

If I could select that notification bar and have them show up in say the search window on the left, so I can know which ones changed, that would be very helpful. Usually I need it so I know which ones I’ve forgotten to lock down and shouldn’t have moved. I’ve had a few headaches later to discover such has happened.

Hi @jlkass,

Thanks for your suggestion, and apologies for the delayed reply.

I had a question about this part of your request:

Usually I need it so I know which ones I’ve forgotten to lock down and shouldn’t have moved. I’ve had a few headaches later to discover such has happened.

When events are both locked and dependent, are you using dependencies mainly because:

  • you want to track how events flow on from each other,
  • they’re left over from earlier planning before you locked down dates, or
  • something else?

We understand why details of exactly what moved would be useful. I just wanted to ask about your workflow though because it might help us understand if there are any broader improvements we should consider around how dependencies and locking interact or are presented.

Both, actually.

I use dependencies to know how the time flows between events that depend on each other, and relationally to those events that might impact other events. (Does Character A know what happened in event C that happened to Character B, or are they still clueless, for example.)

I lock events when I’m satisfied that both the length of time of the event, and when it began and ended are sufficient to tell the story properly and I don’t want it to move because it’s been written into the story at that location in time.

Because I also use events to determine ages/birth dates of characters, if they move and change the birthdate, I need to know. Typically I lock those events down rather quickly, however, so I don’t do that. Or I understand that all of the related birthdates will change/need to be changed because of a critical need to change the event date and time.
