Sort Custom Column Not Working

I have a custom dropdown column with the following choices:

  1. New
  2. Request Sent
  3. Request Received
  4. Done

When I try to use the little arrow to sort, it does not go in order. It sorts randomly.

Is there a setting I need to change?

No there is no setting you need to change, it looks like this is a bug in the program.
I have passed it onto our developers to fix at the earliest opportunity.
