Trying to link to Scrivener documents

Hey all! Trying to link to external Scrivener documents, but it doesn’t seem to work (other file types do work).

I’ve tried both with the x-scrivener-item://C:/Users and just the plain C:/Users/ links, neither works, Aeontimeline just says ‘There is no file at the path specified’. I tried moving the scrivener file to different areas as well, to no success, does anyone know if I’m missing something?

Edit: Version info, on Windows10 Desktop
Version: 3.2.18
Shell Version: 3.4.23

I don’t use Scrivener. Hovewer, you might want to try the File URI scheme, e.g. file:///c:/Users/Username/Documents/my-scriverer-file.scrivx.

Good luck,
Peter

You shouldn’t in essence be able to link to individual Scrivener files as each dependent on the software. If want to link to a document you have three choices
1 export to a pdf, or word document and link to Aeon
2. Copy and paste into a word document and link to Aeon
3. Hold the control key and right click on the file you want to link to. This will show a new right click option of Reveal File Location. This opens the actual data file inside scrivener as an RTF file. If clicking on it, for me, it opens with word. You could save in word and then place in folder for Aeon timeline and attach.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the options! I’ll start exploring these

Hi @brodiekins are you trying to add a link to an item that opens up the file in Scrivener when you click it?

If so, using the “Browse” button to link to the .scrivx file would probably be the easiest way to create a file path our app will recognise.

On Windows, the [YourProjectName].scrivx file is located inside the [YourProjectName].scriv folder, so you’ll need to browse inside the folder to locate the project file. The app won’t let you link to the folder itself.

Here are the steps i did to link my Aeon Timeline to the Scrivener project it is based on.

Clicking the blue link opens the Scrivener Project with Scrivener.

Hi! This isn’t the exact thing I was looking to do, but rather to link exactly documents within a scrivener file using Scrivener’s ‘Copy Document Link’ functionality

Then you would have to try one of the methods I suggested earlier. Here is how I got there, but if doing this a lot may be time consuming, but does work.

Thanks for confirming. We’ve tested this on Mac and Windows.

On Mac, when the URL is added to an item in Aeon Timeline, clicking it it opens the Scrivener project, and then opens that document up in a Split view (alongside whatever document was last opened).

On Windows, clicking the link in Aeon Timeline doesn’t work at all :slightly_frowning_face:

We’ve added this to the bug list to get fixed, but I can’t give you a timeframe on when that might happen just yet.

Rob, if you click the contents link as noted above, it will open the Scene text in word. I tested and did work. to find the exact data file in Scrivener must use the trick shown below to get the file location. Then can add a link and go to the file location the above reveals.

It does work but is tedious. The name is generic. A copy and paste to a word document (or equivalent) and then linking might be better.
here is more what it looks like.
below in blue are clickable links to the scrivener project and an individual file using the above method. both links work with the project one opening the project.

When reveal the document file location will look like below and is one of many data files in the scrivener folder. when you have the name you must browse to its location which is tedious.

when click content the rtf file is opened for me in word, but should be whatever program you use and looks like this below.

No worries! Glad I wasn’t missing something, I can just wait for the fix and work around for now

@Goaliedad That looks like a good option. Thanks for sharing!
